The Story

This is the story of two intrepid Kiwi’s from the South Island of New Zealand who set-off on a journey that they hoped would result in the creation of some of the purest expressions of Marlborough wines to be found. Neither grew up in the wine industry, but being from the South Island, both had a strong

sense of appreciation for mother nature. And a belief.

Their love for the wine industry strengthened when working in some of Marlborough’s pioneering companies doing everything from vineyard pruning, bottling line packing as well as cellar-hand and marketing & export development roles.

Equipped with this experience, the appetite to explore the world of wine heightened. And the quest to have a wine company of their own became an obsession. With backpacks bulging the two Kiwi explorers made the move to Northern Hemisphere with a deliberate mission in mind;

discover, learn, acquire.

Five years later, a quirky piece of Marlborough land with unique terroir was identified, purchased and the self-funded development began. The chosen site was a blank canvas. A run down, unloved sheep farm that could be carefully shaped into a premium quality vineyard. And starting from scratch meant vital decisions could be made that would ultimately fulfil the belief that

‘the wine is made in the vineyard’.

Planting took place over a five-year period resulting in 41 ha of canopy, spanning five blocks, five soil types, five varietals, and nine clones –

Following completion of the vineyard, came the formation of VINULTRA: a business-to-business entity that had scope to enable the creation of stand-alone, market-led propositions. Hereby: a portfolio of wines and Brands that target their niche:

The plan was, and remains, never to be big. It was, and continues to be, about showcasing ‘our sense of place’. Producing wines bespoke to our conditions (our terroir) and tailoring activities to meet the needs of our individual customers.
